About Costa Coffee

The UK's Largest Coffee Chain — History & Background

Costa Coffee was founded in London in 1971 by Italian brothers Bruno and Sergio Costa. Starting as a small wholesale operation supplying freshly roasted coffee to restaurants and hotels, the brand opened its first retail store on Vauxhall Bridge Road. The founders developed the now-iconic Mocha Italia blend — a slow-roasted combination of Arabica and Robusta beans that took 112 attempts to perfect.

Today, Costa Coffee is the UK's largest coffee chain with over 3,000 UK stores and is the world's second-largest coffee chain after Starbucks. In 2019, Costa was acquired by The Coca-Cola Company for £3.9 billion — one of the largest acquisitions in the UK beverages sector. Costa now operates in over 30 countries and runs more than 11,000 Costa Express vending machines globally.

Costa's proprietary roastery in Lambeth, London produces the Mocha Italia blend in small, controlled batches — giving it a consistently bold flavour that sets it apart from competitors using third-party blends. This direct control over the roasting process is central to Costa's quality promise and brand identity.

What Makes Costa Coffee Different?

Unlike many competitors, Costa Coffee owns its own roastery in Lambeth, London, where the Mocha Italia blend is slow-roasted in small batches. The blend combines Arabica beans (for sweetness, floral notes and complexity) with Robusta beans (for the crema, body and caffeine punch) — producing a distinctively bold flavour profile that's become a British institution.

Costa also operates the world's largest network of Costa Express vending machines — over 11,000 globally — found in hospitals, supermarkets, petrol stations and shopping centres, bringing barista-style coffee to locations without a full store.

Sustainability

Costa offers a 25p discount when you bring a reusable cup, plus an extra Costa Club Bean. The BOSH! plant-based range uses 100% vegan ingredients. Costa's cups are fully recyclable at dedicated in-store collection points.

Costa Coffee — Your Questions Answered

The most-searched questions about Costa Coffee prices, calories, deals and menu items — all answered.

How much is a latte at Costa Coffee?
A Costa Coffee Latte costs £4.40 for a standard medium (12 fl oz). Small is slightly cheaper; large and extra-large are more. How many calories in a Costa latte?
A medium Costa Coffee Latte with semi-skimmed milk contains 96 calories (kcal). Switching to skimmed milk reduces this slightly. An Americano has just 12 kcal; a Cortado has 65 kcal. Adding flavoured syrups adds around 50–70 kcal per shot. See our full Costa calorie guide.

Is Costa Coffee cheaper than Starbucks?

How does the Costa Club loyalty scheme work?
